The thoughts and musings of Marcus Rickard

Hi all,

Today we’ve got something a bit different for you on ITSZ; story time! As a part of the campaign Jon ‘Eternal Ocean’ Gregory  wants us to have an idea of what our fleets and admirals have been up to since we started collecting. While my Dindrenzi have a longer history and have more games under their belts I’m going in with the Terrans for this one. Partly to balance the teams at 3 players per side and partly because I’m enjoying the change of gameplay style from the Dindrenzi. As such, I’ve not got a lot of backstory for them so far (only the one game) so I’ve had to come at this from a different angle than the others and instead gone with a more reflective nature of story which you can find below. If you’re interested then keep reading!! Be warned, she’s a long one…

We’re back! (Again…)

Hi all,

So, the last post I put up was 4 months ago saying about how I was back and the blog would pick up again and all that. As you can tell that went really well! But fear not intrepid space battle fans, this time we really are hoping to be back!

After my last post I had to go into intense GW mode to get a 2000 point Iron Warrior army put together for the Heresy Weekender back in February and since then I’ve been in a mix of hobby slump and slowly working through the Iron Warriors. However, on June 25-26 Jon “Eternal Ocean” Gregory from my regular gaming group is planning on running a campaign weekend for the 6 people in the group. This has spurred the entire group back into FSA in a big way (Dan “August Doumerc” Smith has been going nuts trying to nudge us all to finish our fleets).

Campaigns have always been my weakness when it comes to hobby. The idea of doing a narrative weekend of gaming, developing a set of strong characters and caring about what happens to them and the fleet over a series of linked games is just the biggest slice of games imaginable. As such the chance to do one for FSA is putting models on my painting station once more!

I’ll try to keep you updated as we get closer to the Campaign itself with pictures of the various fleets and snippets from the other players so you can keep track of the build up.

Until next time!

Corsica Grandis Defence Fleet; Admiral’s Record

+++Entered by Master of the Log Cpl. Pouzet+++

We followed the co-ordinates given by Bilitas towards the Laurel System, in search of the boy Draykon Rense. We had assumed the Aquan foe had captured him, for they would not be foolish enough to let such a treasured prize slip.

Upon nearing our destination we were met by an Aquan fleet blockading our route. These ships did not meet the profile descriptions for the fleet we were expecting, and so Admiral Doumerc delivered a vox-comms message to request an audience with the Admiral of The Endless Wave, knowing that said ship was not present and hoping that bloodshed could be spared to allow our passing. Their response was silence.

The majority of our vessels assumed the ‘Mailed Fist’ formation while Sentinel Squadron probed from our starboard flank. The Aquans would not engage in a straight fight, instead working their way towards us under the cover of asteroid fields and gas clouds. They had chosen the battlefield that would suit them most and nullify our armaments. Admiral Doumerc regarded this as “a shrewd tactic”, one that he recognised and “admired”.

While we hurt our enemy it was The Legion d’Honneur who felt the most pain. The Terquai ships, allied with the Aqauns, proved formidable, our weapons for the most part unable to breach their armoured flanks. Never before had I seen such a fusillade unleashed as that which destroyed the Colossus in one terrible broadside; a ship of legend from the Age of Liberation, lost in an instant.

It appeared as though the loss of Colossus informed Admiral Doumerc’s decision to order a fleet-wide Fold Space Withdrawal, though it was plain to see that for many of our sister vessels it was too late. It was now imperative that The Ogre, the relic and beacon of hope that it is, escape while it’s crew still drew breath. The drives finished charging and we jumped, just as the logistics section of the bridge was destroyed with a vicious attack from the enemy flagship which would have surely sealed our fate. Admiral Doumerc was seriously injured in the attack, his lower left arm crushed by a console uprooted by the impact. We evacuated all crew from the bridge while the Hazard Team combated the fire.

We had managed to escape with The Ogre barely intact, but without any knowledge of where we had emerged and no idea as to the fate of the rest of the fleet. We drifted for days in this region of space toward what we could see as the nearest star system. The logistical servers were damaged beyond repair and all we could do was to continuously relay our distress beacons across all frequencies; Dindrenzi, Zenian, even resorting to Commonwealth frequencies. When we were finally alerted to an incoming signal it was with a feeling of trepidation, but by the grace of Dramos it became apparent that we found ourselves in the Ba’Kash-controlled Iaris System.

The Ba’Kash had sent scouts and salvage crews to the site of the battle with the Aquans. It became apparent that our enemy had left as soon as they had disabled all of our remaining ships, seemingly too preoccupied (or otherwise gracious in victory) so that they did not take prisoners nor undertake any barbaric deeds of execution. The rest of the fleet had transmitted beacons not only for rescue but also to find the whereabouts of The Ogre, fearful that it had not survived the fold space transit, where upon the Ba’Kash learning of our arrival had responded with affirmation and set about the rescue operation.

The Ogre was eventually rejoined with what remained of The Legion d’Honneur, where they moored in Ba’Kash shipyards for 10 months to undergo extensive repairs and refits. The Colossus was, as feared, completely destroyed, the catastrophic explosion taking Captain Sarrut and all her crew in an instant. We mourned their losses and for those of Boar, Sentinel and August Squadrons who had not returned. Admiral Doumerc issued a requisition order for all nearby Corsican fleets to send crew, ships and munitions to replenish what we had lost and bring us back to fighting strength. A response came from Commodore Losier of the Corsican 9th Storm Zone Fleet, who while currently engaged with Terrans in the Olympus Cluster understood the gravity of ensuring The Ogre had a full complement of accompanying ships. Again, his actions for the glory of our people is duly noted.

Our fleet had barely left the docks of Iaris before we were at battle stations once more. We were met by Sorylians, suspected to be Outriders for we believed them to have been gathering intelligence on the Ba’Kash territory, led by a ship on record as the Equinox Transcendent. Multiple incoming vox-comms alerts chimed, no doubt the fleet Captains requesting the order to engage and enact vengeance for what had befallen us 10 months previous, yet Admiral Doumerc once more offered a peaceful resolution to the enemy. Yet once more, the reply was silence.

Boar Squadron did great damage to the enemy flagship which The Bane of Tyrants duly finished off, while The Ogre viciously unleashed it’s newly forged weapons batteries to devastating effect across the field. The day was ours with minimal casualties, the Admiral’s strategy falling into place perfectly and leaving only one enemy ship operational; to return to it’s masters bearing the news and scars of defeat. With a great cheer of vented fury from all aboard The Ogre’s bridge, Admiral Doumerc opened the comms channels to address his fleet with the following message:

“Soldiers; there is not much more to say than that you have all acted with great courage and shown your strength of arms. It has been a relief for us all to avenge the losses we sustained and to right the wrongs of our humbling defeat, and today I am thankful to say that I have fought with you. Today, the Legion has regained it’s honour.”

A status report has been sent to Fleet Marshall Bilitas. For now, we set course to join forces with Commodore Losier and the 9th in the Olympus Cluster.

+++Report Ends+++

Guest Article written by Dan (August Doumerc on the forums)

Fantastic narrative wrap up of the results of August’s first two games of FSA! 1-1 is hardly a bad way to start an admiral’s career; pretty sure I was 0-5 until my first win….

Hoping to get a few more guest articles up from the likes of Eternal Ocean and Tibberg over the next few weeks detailing their exploits in the Firestorm Universe!

Until next time.

August Doumerc – An Introduction

Hi all,

Welcome back to ITSZ. Today I’ve got a slightly unusual article compared to normal but it’s something I wanted to share. My regular gaming group, consisting of (forum names) Tibberg, Eternal Ocean and August Doumerc are really into writing up narratives and characters for the games we’ve play. This may have become apparent from previous posts on here but I thought I’d state the obvious! August is the latest addition to the Firestorm group, being a long time player of many a Games Workshop product and to say he joined with enthusiasm would be understating things. Shortly after seeing a couple of games and talking with us about the way the system worked he went and bought enough models for a Patrol Fleet. This was at the end of last week. They were unpainted. Now, he has a fully painted 800 point fleet of Dindrenzi, with a back story and his first game is scheduled for Saturday. If that’s not going in with both feet I don’t know what is and huge respect to him for getting everything turned around so quickly. Some of you may have seen this on the Forum already but for those that haven’t I’ll use his own words to describe his fleet:

The Fate of Draykon Rense

The Black. For a career navel officer it had a certain comforting quality. However, normally said career navel officer would be on a warm and heated bridge surrounded by those who would enact his every whim. Now that Rense found himself wearing his disconcertingly thin survival suit standing on his shattered bridge with the very few survivors of his crew mag-locked in their stations to prevent them from floating uncontrollably about the place, he found space a considerably less comforting entity. The Wrath was a broken shell, a beast not tamed but torn apart and left to die. Reinforced glass floated serenely about the space, consoles sparked fitfully and the bridge lay bathed in crimson emergency lighting.

Who am I? And what’s next?

Hi all,

Alex over at Fleet Signal was kind enough to give me a little welcome back post earlier today for which I am very grateful; in the unlikely event any of my readers haven’t seen his blog I highly recommend checking it out! Seeing as Alex was kind enough to point some new readers my way I thought I’d do a quick (re)introduction and give some idea of where the blog is going over the next couple months.

First off, who am I? As you’ve probably gathered by now, my name’s Matt though I’m frequently known by Swifty by some of my older friends (inherited family nickname). I’m a mechanical design engineer for an aerospace, defence and communications company with a focus on CAD and additive manufacturing (more on this another time – see below). I’m currently working at a site in Newmarket, Suffolk but my “home” is Bournemouth, Dorset, (UK for any overseas readers) where I’m hoping to get back to in September. I’m currently on a rotational graduate scheme so I move house and job every 6 months (hence the considerable drop in posting until recently!).

I’ve been a wargamer for about 12 years now, starting in my early teens with an Imperial Guard army for Warhammer 40,000 and have been in and out of the hobby ever since. I currently have 2 Astra Militarum armies (including that very early one that’s not seen daylight in a decade…), the better half of a Great Company of Space Wolves, a 2000 point Horus Heresy White Scars army that is very much WIP, a set of Soviets for Bolt Action that are still on their sprues (I got a bit excited… but I’ll get to them eventually, hobbyists promise!) and then my Dindrenzi for Firestorm Armada of which I have a Grand Fleet’s worth of ships (rough estimate) and looking to expand it in the near future. I also bought the Terrans from the Storm Zone starter set back off the guy I split it with originally as he wasn’t going to use them and I fancied a second fleet but I’ve not added to them since.

My main goal at the moment is to try and get at least one game in a month. The reason for this is two fold; partly so that I can produce a decent battle report for you all to read regularly but mainly so that I can get better at the game! I’ve not had a good chance to play a number of games back to back to carry over lessons learned from game to game meaning I often catch myself making similar mistakes and only realising after the fact. Thankfully the Dindrenzi are a relatively forgiving fleet but even so I end up in the draw to major loss catagory far more often than the minor-major win! Though it should be stated here that one of my regular opponents (Jon – Aquan Fleet) has dice more corrupt than a Terran commitee:

Dem 6's!
Case in point…

It got so bad that he actually did the salt water test on them just to prove to us that his dice weren’t rigged (they weren’t, he just seems to get these incredible exploding dice streaks about once or twice every game).

My secondary goal is to actually find time to finish painting my fleet beyond the crimson that they currently have on them but as with all things hobby… I’ll get to it at some point – possibly even with an article.

So, what’s next for ITSZ (Thanks to Alex for the acronym!)? Well there’s a range of articles I want to cover in the next few months:

  • Battle Reports – the last time I asked my (2 person and a goat) readership what they wanted this was top of the list so more of these are on the way. They’ll follow the same pattern of the last one in a part narrative, part game play format. These may occasionally be guest articles from Jon or Chris, my regular opponents, or Dan who is looking to get himself a Relthoza fleet in the near future.
  • Fluff/Backstory – for me one of the most exciting things about wargaming is that you are free to create these characters and stories for them that take the game beyond “A shoots at B. I roll X dice with Y successes so Z happens to you”. I want a bit of tension, drama, intrigue. In short, I want to care about the game I’m playing. If my admiral’s ship is destroyed it shouldn’t just be a negative score on my battle log, that is a serious loss of war material and experience! As such, I’ll be doing the odd little bit here and there about each of the tier 1 ships and the squadrons below that from my fleet to flesh them out a bit. If anyone else has anything similar I’d love to read it!
  • Fleet on a Budget – we’re already half way through this series so it kind of goes without saying that I’ll be finishing it up with the Kurak Alliance races. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the three that are up so far, or at least found them useful!
  • Ship Analysis – I’d like to spend some time delving a bit deeper into some of the ships in the various fleets; look at their options and stat lines and consider some alternative uses for them or useful tactics. Rolled into this will be a few Comparison articles such as Destroyer vs Cruiser, weighing up the pros and cons of each ship in their intended role and which might be more useful.
  • Planetfall – I’ve yet to really get my teeth into Planetfall having only recently gotten back into the hobby but what I will say is that the concept behind the System Wars rules and the idea of linking games together from the depths of space to planetary conquest is pretty much one of the defining ideals of my concept of wargaming. Naturally I’ll be getting involved in the near future with a Dindrenzi force and I’m really excited to give it a go!
  • 3D Printed Gaming Aids – There has been a lot of hype in the wargaming community about 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing (3DP/AM) with people claiming everything from it being terrible and never going to be capable of the detail we currently see (totally untrue) right through to it putting all wargaming companies out of business because people will just make their own models (also totally untrue for sooooo many reasons). I’m hoping to produce a number of items to be sold through a dedicated Shapeways store which will add to the game. These will not be items to replace ships in your fleets for cheap or similar; that is anathema to me. Spartan have created an incredible game with some of the best models of their type in the world and I am certainly not going throw that back in their faces by making rip offs. However, I have some ideas for certain items which I think will help add another dimension to the game. I’ll also be doing an article on the current state of 3DP/AM from an industrial and “prosumer” standpoint to hopefully try and dislodge some of the unwarrented hype that is currently going around.

To surmise, I hope this has given you a little window into what is coming for ITSZ and a bit more about who I am and why I’m doing this blog. As always, comments, criticism and the like are very welcome and encouraged – I want to help build this game up so the more in tune I am with what you lot want to read about the better it’ll be for all of us!

Until next time!

Hiatus no more

Hi all my non-existent readers!

As is no doubt very apparent there has been no new content on this blog for some time! However, soon that will not be the case. Yesterday I played my first game of firestorm in several months and have arranged another one for tomorrow! For this one there will be a battle report to kick off the first new batch of content for the site.

With planetfall now being up and running and the rules for linking them with firestorm armada my gaming group has become a bit reinvigorated by this great game of ours and are looking to play more often! This means battle reports, painting of fleets and a dip into planetfall are all coming your way soon.

Until next time!

Matt

Full power to drives, all ahead full

Greetings fellow Admirals,

Welcome to the first post on Into The Storm Zone, a blog dedicated to showing and sharing my progress with Firestorm Armada, a 1/10,000th scale starship battle game by Spartan Games. I have quite literally just stepped into the game as I’ll explain in a moment but I can already see the promise this game has and I’m a huge fan of the game mechanics and the models. So, let’s get the intro questions out of the way!

Firstly, why did you get into Firestorm?

Quite simply I love spaceships! (I’m an aerospace design engineer in training) Between Chris and I there probably isn’t much in the Sci Fi genre that we haven’t touched on or looked at one point or another and each of us have sizeable collections of books, games and films covering the utopian, dystopian and sometimes just plain odd futuristic settings the world has generated so far. My friend, Chris, and I are both big Battleflet Gothic fanboys and were deeply saddened by the discontinuation of the game by Games Workshop.  Chris in particular had racked up a lot of playing hours with the starships of the Imperium, Chaos and Orks while I had only had the chance to touch on the Imperial fleet before it became a relic of Gaming History. As such, we really wanted to find a game to fill the gap of collossal starships dealing death in the void, and Firestorm offers just that!

Secondly, how did you get into Firestorm?

This one was pretty much pure chance. My group of regular gaming friends went to London to visit one of our mates and play a load of Warhammer/role play games/board games over the course of a weekend. As we needed some tables we headed to Dark Sphere where you can rent gaming space for the day (if you live anywhere near London and haven’t heard of this place you need to check it out, it is gaming nirvana!). We walked in and found that the place was stacked full of loads of different table top wargames that we had never seen or in some cases heard of before! I’d seen some stuff about Firestorm before and it had tickled some interest but never really hit home (it was still in the 1st edition at the time and I’d heard mixed reviews). So as we were wandering around the store Chris and I spotted the Battle for Valhalla starter set for Firestorm and decided to take a closer look. It pretty much hit all the required boxes; giant spaceships, fighters and bombers, different weapon types, interesting races and boarding actions being some of the key ones for us. So, about 3.7 seconds later we decided to buy it and split it between us, Chris went for Terran and I took the Dindrenzi (Railguns = Awesome).

Thirdly, where next with the game?

Well, firstly we’re going to play through the linked missions in the Valhalla book. As an aside, I really wish more games companies did this with their starter sets; it is effectively a series of linked battles with an overriding narrative to get you into the fluff of the game and the mechanics at the same time. You start with the simplest class of ship, a frigate and then gradually introduce more complex ships, game rules and terrain effects so you don’t get inundated by rules all in a single sitting. In addition to the linked games, we want to get our starter fleets painted up (a post should be up sometime next week covering my painting of the Dindrenzi fleet) and then look to expand up to around the 800 points limit of a Patrol Fleet sized game. Once we’ve got a bit more of a handle on the rules and how our respective fleets work we’ll probably look to either expand our current fleet or start on a second for some variety.

So that pretty much wraps up the first post! I hope this blog turns into something worth reading and that you guys get involved and start commenting and sharing. As I mentioned at the start, I’m completely new to this so any advice or veteran points of view would be appreciated!

Until next time,

Matt
